BBB

I've failed terribly at updating my life but that's really only because I've kept a very low profile recently. After realizing how much money I can spend on not going out and staying in watching my housemate's dvds of Dexter and Prison Break I have pretty much stopped going outside with the exception of the occasional trip to the grocery store. Rio is still hot as ever staying in the mid 90s everyday. School is the only place I get refuge from the heat because all of my classes have the air conditioning on super high all the time to the point of needing a sweater (ha). I've made it my personal responsibility to try and enjoy Brazilian television more and now I watch a novela with my housemates every night. This is my favorite actor on the show who plays two characters who are twin brothers, love it.

What I absolutely cannot make myself like however is this reality show Big Brother Brasil (BBB) which everyone pronounces 'biggie bruder'. I think it aired in the US but its popularity in Brazil dominates any other reality show I've ever encountered. It's basically a propaganda/product advertisement filled Real World but the people on the show NEVER leave the house and there's some sort of elimination process involved that I don't understand. Everytime we sit down to watch it I want to ask about the logistics but my housemates are so entirely focused on the show they don't even hear me when I ask a question. My cellphone company, TIM even sends me text messages about BBB! The national news Globo has dedicated a special page on their website (with 24 hour video coverage of the BBB house) to help me demonstrate the weight of BBB's importance on Brazilian pop culture (http://bbb.globo.com/). This is a picture of everyone's favorite, Sergio, who was unfortunately voted off last night. We miss you Sergio!
