On Thursday I was in Portuguese class, which was as ridiculous as ever. The Portuguese for foreigners program is so unhelpful! I had two tests this week which were the hardest tests I've ever taken in my life and it's because formal portuguese is so different from how brazilians talk. Even people from here have a hard time remembering how to spell, write, and use proper portuguese grammar. My patience for Portuguese class is even more non-existent because it's such a waste of time to learn slang in class when that's what you learn the easiest in a language. What's hard is taking tests about Latin American relations with Asia in eloquent brazilian portuguese! Anyway I was talking to this Peruvian guy in class who told me about how everyone in his calculus class hardcore cheats on tests. (Caio confirmed later that day that it's really normal to cheat on tests in Brazil and didn't believe it when I told him that shit gets you expelled in the US.) At this point I was thinking, brazilians you're making it really hard for me to take you guys seriously. THEN our portuguese teacher made us sing along to a BEER COMMERCIAL in class. Sure, singing songs in new languages is every teacher's favorite torture, but at least make us sing Samba or Bossa Nova. A beer commercial, really? I've included the video so that everyone can also enjoy "pega leve". How does my school not expect me to go home to the states and tell everyone people from Rio are cheaters and alcoholics? Truthfully though, nothing ever gets too serious here.
