Carnaval Day 2-3-4

Saturday was the hottest day it should ever be so I spent the day inside sweating beer under the fan. If I'm starting to sound like a huge alcoholic just remember that Carnaval is a once a year thing in which I am mandated to participate...By nightfall Krystal and I bought a $R18 bottle of champagne and went off to go dancing in Lapa. The place was more disgusting than ever considering the city has doubled in population this week on account of the world's largest party. There's something unsettlingly sinister about Carnaval in general. It might just be the fact that I watched season 2 of True Blood in two days recently or due to my puritan-eyes, but Rio is a straight up hell hole right now. Everyone is in the streets with bad costumes screaming and drinking and leaving huge piles of trash and puddles of piss everywhere. At times it's pretty fantastic (e.g. baile-funk/electronica club until 5am) but more so it's really scary.

Sunday I went to the beach and the water was green and every square inch of sand was filled up with chairs and umbrellas. In the afternoon Krystal, Lygia and her boyfriend and I all went to see the parade in Rio which was clearly the craziest thing I've ever experienced. The parade is basically a competition between different 'schools' and each school has about 3,000 people. There was no where to sit once we got there, we lost Lygia's boyfriend and it was terrible, but at least I checked that experience off my list of things to do before I die.

Monday was incredible. Bruno took us to his parent's house in Barra de Tijuca (the Miami suburb of Rio). All of his friends call this house Club Med because it's huge, luxurious and fantastic. It had a ballet studio, pool, four refrigerators of snacks, outdoor kitchen, etc etc. We stayed there all day drinking passion fruit capirinhas and basking in the company of his beautiful friends, including the winners of Brazil's Survivor? Krystal somehow got us invited to their wedding in June--I think we officially fell down the rabbit hole of this world.
